WHO ARE the Young Pioneers?

Young Pioneers is a new magazine of Independent Travel Culture published in beautiful Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with one solitary goal in mind: to prove that long-term, low-cost world travel is easier -- and much more rewarding -- than you probably figure.

Young Pioneers is a themed magazine, with each issue exploring a different subculture of the independent travel universe. The premiere issue, however, acts as a sort of primer on the subject of independent travel culture itself, by introducing readers to a monumentally important group of writers, editors, filmmakers, artists, thinkers, and explorers who have been instrumental in creating the budget-travel and backpacking scenes we know today.

James Crotty and Michael Lane, better known as The Mad Monks, are the premiere issue's cover stars. The Monks' slow rise to prominence took place throughout the 1990s, as they explored the darker corners of the United States in an RV and published a professional-quality magazine about their experiences. The Monks, now living in Los Angeles and New York City, are considering a relaunch of their magazine within the year. They discuss their decade in the Monkmobile, (as their RV was known) as well as the possible relocation of their operations to Europe, in the premiere issue of Young Pioneers.

Also featured in the premiere issue are interviews with:

[ ] Tony Wheeler, the founder of Lonely Planet Publications.
[ ] Susan Griffith, the author of the legendary guidebook, "Work Your Way Around the World."
[ ] Travel writer, monologist, and Ethical Traveler founder Jeff Greenwald.
[ ] Independent war reporter Robert Young Pelton, who discovered the American Taliban in Mazar-e-Sharif, and who authors "The World's Most Dangerous Places."
[ ] Vagabonding columnist and budget-travel expert Rolf Potts.
[ ] Holly Morris, who produces and stars in the Emmy-winning PBS series Adventure Divas.
[ ] Legendary San Francisco Examiner and Salon travel editor Don George.
[ ] and many more...

Future issues of Young Pioneers will use immersion journalism techniques to explore the various worlds of working travelers, and other people who travel as a way of life. In early spring 2005, editor Dan Eldridge will travel to the Deep South and various cities in Western Europe to document the world of WWOOFers, or Willing Workers on Organic Farms. WWOOFers travel on a circuit of worldwide organic farms, where they're given room and board in exchange for manual labor. He'll also travel throughout Western and Central Europe in search of Fruit Trampers - backpackers who support their wanderlust by working as itinerant fruit pickers (and packers) during the European harvest season.

Other themes under consideration include the commercial fishing subculture in Alaska, the kibbutz and moshav life in Israel, the world of freelance war reporters, the world of traveling buskers and street performers, and the odd tradition of the Wandergesellen - a sort of traveling apprenticeship for German construction workers.
